In Conversation With Lukas Wenzel, Partner at Westfalenfinanz

Lukas Wenzel is a corporate finance adviser based in Dortmund, operating out of the western region of Germany. As a representative of Westfalenfinanz at the First Advisiom Deal Summit, he brought with him a perspective shaped by deep roots in the German mid-market. We sat down with him to talk about the surprises of the First Advisiom Deal Summit, what it really takes to break into the German market, and why advising owner-managed businesses demands as much emotional intelligence as financial expertise.

What’s one thing about this deal summit that you didn’t expect? The one thing from the summit I didn’t expect is that some of the different member firms all face the same difficulties or challenges in the market as us, and that the approach and the team size of the member firms are pretty much comparable to our approach.

If another member firm came to you tomorrow looking for inbound into your country, what would you say they need to know first? This is kind of a hard question to answer if you are inside the market and have to take the outside perspective, but I think in Germany, pretty much everything works through the network, and that you have a warm access to probably the market or the companies in the market.

"In Germany, pretty much everything works through the network"

In one sentence, what is it that you would say that your firm does best? What we do best is that we have an entrepreneurial mindset ourselves, and that we advise the companies on an eye-level so that we try to reach the best result for our mandates, and have a deep understanding – especially with a focus on succession projects – to understand the emotional side of the business also.

Partner at Westfalenfinanz, Lukas Wenzel is an M&A specialist for medium-sized businesses with extensive transaction experience advising entrepreneurs, companies and investors across national and international deals in the small and mid-cap segment.

Prior to joining Westfalenfinanz in December 2024, he gained several years of experience at a boutique M&A consultancy, advising across multiple industries and building an extensive network within the German Mittelstand as well as with strategic and private equity investors. He has worked across the full deal lifecycle in various advisory capacities.

Lukas holds a Bachelor’s and a Master of Science in Engineering from Ruhr University Bochum, complemented by an Executive MBA specialising in Mergers and Acquisitions from the University of Münster, combining technical and financial expertise.
