In Conversation With Charles Bryan, Managing Director at Bengur Bryan

Charles Bryan is a veteran investment banker and co-founder of Bengur Bryan & Co., Inc., a Baltimore-based advisory firm with over three decades of experience working with closely held and family-owned businesses. As a founding member of Advisiom, he came to Gibraltar with a clear ambition: to extend his firm’s reach into the global markets his clients increasingly need access to. We sat down with him to talk about why international connectivity matters for a domestic-focused boutique, the untapped potential of cross-border dealmaking, and what success looks like for Advisiom in the years ahead.

Charles, why don’t we start with you telling us who you are, your firm, and where you’re joining us from? I’m Charles Bryan. Our firm is named Bengur Bryan & Company. We’re based in Baltimore, Maryland.

In one sentence, what would you say that your firm does best? Our firm specialises in working with closely held and privately held family businesses to achieve their goals.

What made you say yes to Advisiom? The reason we decided to join Advisiom is that we felt like we needed to have a broader presence globally. We felt like we could reach most buyers internationally, but not necessarily all our clients believe that. And we knew that we could be missing opportunities if we didn’t have so-called experts in the regions that we wanted to reach.

Who have you met at the Summit that you wouldn’t have met anywhere else? Almost everybody we’ve met, we would not have met anywhere else. We now have access to Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. And individually, Clive from the UK. Seems like we’re kindred spirits. Our friend from Denmark, who does innovation financing, I think, will be a good resource for us. And having access in Asia through the Singapore connection will be good.

"Almost everybody we've met, we would not have met anywhere else"

Where would you want to see the Advisiom network this time next year? I’d like to see the Advisiom network continue to grow, add quality firms, so maybe 50% more, double perhaps next year. And I’d like to see some success stories. I’d love to see us be able to get a deal done with one of our colleagues in Advisiom and see that happen across the board.

Managing Director and Co-Founder at Bengur Bryan, Charles Bryan has over 20 years of investment banking experience advising emerging growth companies and businesses undergoing strategic change, with a particular focus on consumer, transportation and business services.

He co-founded Bengur Bryan in 1991 and has since advised clients ranging from multi-billion dollar transportation companies to industry consolidators and early-stage e-commerce businesses. Prior to this, he was an industry group head at Alex. Brown & Sons, where he led equity offerings, private placements, M&A transactions and financial restructurings.

Charles is a General Partner of Patriot Capital, L.P., the merchant banking affiliate of Bengur Bryan. He previously worked at KPMG Peat Marwick in the Private Business Advisory Services Group and holds a CPA designation.
