In Conversation With Clive Hatchard, Head of Advisory at Debrett’s

Clive Hatchard is one of the most experienced mid-market advisers in the UK. As Head of Advisory at Debrett’s and President of the Advisory Board at Advisiom, he came to Gibraltar as both a founding member and a founding voice of the network. We sat down with Clive Hatchard, Head of Advisory at Debrett’s, to talk about what drew him to Advisiom’s inaugural Deal Summit in Gibraltar, why international reach is non-negotiable for ambitious boutiques, and what it really means when the person across the table is the one who will see your deal through to the end.

Clive, why don’t you tell us who you are, your firm, and where you’re joining us from? Okay, sure. I’m Clive Hatchard. I’m the Head of Advisory within Debrett’s. Debrett’s is a boutique corporate finance house operating out of Birmingham and London. Currently in Gibraltar, at the inaugural Advisiom meeting.

What made you say yes to Advisiom? The reason we joined Advisiom was a past relationship with Amanda. I liked her vision, that she was looking to set up something new. We were doing the same; we were setting up something new. We were growing in London, and we’ve grown aggressively.

Any boutique, to be successful, needs international reach. Although we can do it to a degree internally, there’s nothing better than an active, collaborative network where you meet people a couple of times a year. And I just knew from previous experience with Amanda she would do this right, and she’d get the right member firms.

"The person you meet is the person who runs the deal for you"

Last question. Complete this sentence: “The boutique advantage is…” The boutique advantage is experience, and proper experience, where the person you meet is the person who runs the deal for you. And that’s what you really get out of any boutique, and why we differentiate ourselves from all the mainstream investment banks or larger accountancy firms.

Clive Hatchard serves as Head of Advisory at Debrett’s, bringing over 30 years’ experience in M&A, corporate finance and strategic advisory. He has completed more than 100 mid-market transactions across multiple sectors, guiding founders, shareholders and private equity investors through complex deals from growth capital to exits.
